Abstract
This paper presents the works of Tripo Kokolja from the collection of the Dominican convent in Dubrovnik. They include the Mystery of the Rosary and are exhibited as fifteen distinct medallions and the painting Our Lady of the Rosary. Both the medallions and the painting are dated to the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th century. Characteristic iconographic features of both themes were developed under the influence of the Dominicans, and they especially gained in popularity once the resolutions of the Council of Trent had begun to be enforced at the end of the 16th century, lasting over the whole 17th century. It is important to emphasize that both works had been attributed to Tripo Kokolja, as well as a significant number of works located in the area of Boka Kotorska which were attributed to this artist in the second half of the 20th century, unfortunately in such a manner that new attributions were based on old, unreliable and undocumented attributions.
This paper offers a comparative stylistic analysis including the author's other reliably attributed and undocumented works, as well as other authors’ works with the same iconographic theme. The attribution of the Mystery of the Rosary is rejected, while the painting Our Lady of the Rosary can be considered one of Kokolja's works.
