Abstract

This paper focuses on adolescents' leisure time in context of public libraries, and has been created with a purpose of a more comprehensive study which would investigate all the opportunities and leasure activities public libraries could offer to adolescents. Throughout this paper, I will attempt to show the importance of innovative and interesting programs and activities for adolescents, and thus try to break the established prejudices about libraries and adolescents as a library user group. The theoretical part deals with the issue of adolescence, leisure time, public libraries and youth services in libraries, and provides an example of good practice in the Vukovar City Library, ie the Spajalica Youth Department. As a conclusion of the theoretical part of the work, based on the aforesaid theoretical settings, the role of library in adolescents’ leisure time will be determined. The empirical part of the work is structurally divided into two parts. The first part of the research focuses on the situation in croatian public libraries regarding the implementation of library activities and programs for young adults. The second part of research is a case study of the Selčina Library, which consists of researching library user satisfaction, the way they spend their free time and the general attitude and perception of the library. In this part of the research, an interview method was used with the library coordinator and two groups of library patrons – active patrons who are often involved in the activities and events that the library offers and those inactive who mostly use the library for borrowing books.
