Abstract
Archives are the keepers of knowledge and guardians of heritage of all countries. Need for access to archive material is growing each day, especially since the uprise of computers and growth of digital literacy. Most of archival materials is publicly available for users. International standards for archival description had great influence on archival operations and usage of archival materials. ISAD(G) (International Standard for Archival Description) was
developed by a Committee of International Council on Archives. Though at beginning it caused a lot of scepticism by the archivists for implementing the standardized rules, especially because archives are different from country to country and have their specifics, it was latter accepted
because it greatly helped with electronic archival description for which it was later realized it could greatly help connecting archives around the word. The goal of archival description is to identify and clarify context and content of archival materials and in that manner facilitate its availability. That is accomplished by making clear and appropriate representation and organizing according to models that were determined in advance. The most important
characteristic of ISAD(G) standard is multi-level description which enabled description of funds and subfunds on lower levels and greatly improved content in informative aids before implementation of standard which was consisted mostly from listing of archival materials. That enabled better usage of information aids, from descriptive side and from the side of content which can be found in them. One of the main reasons for implementation of international
standard is the unique identificator which is given to each fund. That identificator enables easier international exchange of archival materials and networking of archives. From examples of old and new information aids we can see differences and positive influence of ISAD(G) standard
on those aids. By analysing the information aids one can notice that they are developed by experts guided by the instructions from the standards and made content detailed thus creating useful information aids using which it is later easy to search through the materials.
