Abstract
The paper presents a research study of reading and its influences on writing in English as a foreign language. The sample was made of students of English because they are, due to their academic obligations, extensive readers. The assumption of the research study was that the students of English produce complex texts as they do for their classes. However, the study showed that the students are not ready to invest the same amount of effort into something they will not be graded on and where they will stay anonymous as they would for their academic obligations. Such approach inevitably yielded unsatisfactory results which at first glance indicate that the students themselves are not at a high enough level given the stage of their learning. The conclusion is that reading is exceptionally beneficial for learning a language, but also that this kind of research demands a different approach.
