Abstract
Considering the widespread presence of hearing disorders, there are several ways of treating severe and profound hearing loss. When it comes to severe or profound hearing loss, a possible treatment is the surgical implantation of the cochlear implant, a highly sophisticated hearing aid. In order to make this therapy as successful as possible, a thorough presurgical treatment is necessary as well as a delicate surgical procedure which is performed by a medical specialist. After the device has been implanted, postsurgical treatment is necessary. During the postsurgical period, the implanted hearing aid is activated and the implanted person is in need of speech and hearing rehabilitation. A possible treatment method is the Verbotonal Method which was developed by Petar Guberina. The verbotonal approach has been applied in Croatia for a long time and it turned out to be very efficient in treating implanted patients. The method restores speaking and hearing abilities by linguistic (lexical) and non-linguistic (non-lexical) means trying to optimize perception. There are many methodical approaches to speech and hearing rehabilitation, but since the Verbotonal Method is trying to restore and improve a person's perception by many means of expression, a large variety of methodical approaches within the Verbotonal Method is possible.
