Abstract
In my final thesis the main stylistic terms are elaborated with particular emphasis on the main
functional styles in Swedish divided in three larger groups. Some of the subgroups of the
functional styles are explained, accompanied by corresponding texts as examples. In the thesis
has been given a short overview of style development, with reference to rhetoric. I pointed out
that there are some difficulties when trying to define the term “style” by showing some
different definitions of it. Rhetoric is, like „the art of pleasant speech“, closely connected to
functional styles and stylistics in general. I also elaborated the connection between the word
choice and a certain style, as well as the language impact to the addressee, that is the reader
and the society in general. The same way people dress appropriately for specific occasions,
equally words, i.e. form, should be adjusted to the occasion. In addition, an emphasis is
applied to the particularity of functional styles, relating to their mutual overlapping within
texts and the impossibility to separate them clearly.
