Abstract
This bachelor thesis deals with the social engagement of the so-called socio-crime fiction, a
literary genre with a firm foothold in Scandinavia. The genre's most prominent attribute is the
critique of the welfare state and its disintegration, depicted mostly through an incompetent
police force as the corrupt protector of the people. The thesis takes the Swedish journalist and
writer, Stieg Larsson's novel, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, as a representative of
the genre. Following an introductory overview of the genre's development, the history of
which is thought to have begun in 1965 with the Swedish duo made up of Maj Sjöwall and
Per Wahlöö, and became further popularized in the final decade of the 20th century by another
Swede, Henning Mankell, and his inspector Kurt Wallander novel series, the thesis turns to
the differences and similarities between the genre’s three developmental stages, with Larsson
representing the third, so-called noir stage of the socio-crime fiction, which is particularly
dealt with. The noir phenomenon and Larsson’s social intervention are explained through
examples from the novel and backed up by excerpts from the works of literary critics.
