Abstract
Emergence of conflicts within a classroom is neither unusual nor unexpected, and they can be
encountered on a daily basis, in various situations and among different age and sex groups.
This thesis provides an insight into the issue of conflict emergence among students attending
lower grades of elementary school. The first section of the thesis presents theoretical
knowledge of characteristics of conflict and possible means of resolving them, while the
second part states and elaborates the results of an empirical research conducted among class
teachers. The results of qualitative study conducted on the sample of 10 fourth grade
elementary class teachers in Zagreb are presented within the empirical research. Teachers are
interviewed about causes and types of conflicts, methods of resolving conflicts, students’
attempts to independently resolve their conflicts, teachers’ involvement as mediators, and
documenting the appearance of conflicts.
