Abstract
As a dominant economic paradigm, neoliberalism influences many aspects of contemporary
society, which as a result makes it widely accepted and seemingly natural. As are many other
areas of political and social action, education is pressured to follow the rule of the market as
its primary mode of function. The paper discusses several elements of educational policies,
which serve as evidence of education being shaped by market ideology. Those include
objectives-driven curriculum, competencies-oriented education and standardized assessment
as ways of maintaining control over educational output and achieving greater efficiency. Also,
the paper stresses the importance of pedagogy, which, given the humanistic principles of its
theory, should not accept the role imposed by the neoliberal agenda. Moreover, it should
persistently question the nature of modifications within education and pursue the development
of free critical thinking as the universal educational goal.
