Abstract

This paper examines what educators, who have experience of co-operation with members of singleparent families, think about their characteristics and possible needs. The theoretical part of the paper tries to explain the negative attitudes of the society towards single-parent families as well as the appearance of stereotypes in the perspective of pedagogical experts. The most common features of stereotypes which experts have towards children and their families are emphasized. There is also a systematic overview of possible specific needs of single-parent families in collaboration with the institution. The aim of the empirical part of the paper was to determine how educators in institutions for early and pre-school education understand the characteristics of the members of single-parent families and specific needs which those members may have in co-operation with the institution. The result of the empirical part of this paper indicate the absence of stereotypes in the perception of parents and children from single-parent families, despite some lower estimates of children's characteristics. In recognizing the needs of single-parent families, experts are the least aware of the importance of cooperation with both parents in single-parent families that arise from divorce, and the need for greater inclusiveness of their own practice. Likewise, educators are poorly informed about the sources of support that families can get outside the institution. It can be concluded, considering all the mentioned facts, that additional knowledge about this topic would be very useful to educators.
