Abstract

Chess will be examined mostly in relation to players that play it, while minor focus will be put on the game itself. The main focus of this paper is a kind of devotion that chess players have when studying chess theory, playing or talking about chess are in question. The author will try to point out the manifestations of the unconscious part of the chess player's self either phisically, verbally or on the chess board itself. All of the collected ethnographic material that will be analysed with psychoanalytic theory will give insight in chess players's motivations which are reflected on a game of chess, on the chessboard or on the bodies of chess players. Emphasis will be on the analysis of author's own intentions when talking about chess and his simultaneous involvment in scientific reasearch of the game of chess and chess players as well as his two year amateur chess career.
