Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the predictors of claimed and behavioral self-handicapping and defensive pessimism. Also, we wanted to examine if self-handicapping strategies and defensive pssimism will predict the length of time a student will study and their grade point average. Research was conducted online. 390 students participated in the study, out of which 25 were excluded from further statistical analysis because they answered less than 50% of the questions in the questionnaire. Of the remaining participants 73% were women. The results obtained show that sociodemographic variables are not a significant predictor of claimed self-handicapping and defensive pessimism, while gender statistically significantly predicts the use of behavioral self-handicapping. From the set of prediction variables, core self-evaluation, task orientation, work-avoidance orientation and external orientation significantly predict the use of claimed and behavioral self-handicapping. Core self-evaluation proved to be the only significant predictor of defensive pessimism. Control variables had a statistically significant contribution to the explanation of the variance of the criteria for length of study for undergraduate and masters studies, where age was a significant predictor for a group of undergraduate students and age and gender for a group of masters students. In predicting the grade point average, only behavioral selfhandicapping proved to be a significant predictor.
