Abstract

Goal of this paper is to investigate the existence and intensity of impact of the time limit on the performance in cognitive abilities test, as well as investigating whether the time limit presents the potential source of construct irrelevant variance. Research had features of experiment in which the respondents solved the parallel versions of cognitive abilities test(Test S) with the varying levels of time limits (15 minutes, 25 minutes and no time limit) with three time points. In the first experimental situation they also solved the Numeric factor test, while the questionnaire was used in the third situation to collect the information about the characteristics of personality, strategies and behaviours during the testing situations. Results have shown that, at the level of the group, time limit has impact on the performance as hypothesised and that the average performance increases with the increase of available time. The greatest increase in performance was found between the greatest time limit situation (15 minutes) and the situation without time limit. Furthermore, respondents can be divided into three categories: poor performance in all situations, good performance in all situations and respondents whose performance increases as they have more time. Respondents sensitive to time limit also score lower on the Numerical factor test, they have lower estimates of their general and specific performance in cognitive tests, they score lower in the measures of positive perfectionism, while also scoring higher in the measures of sensitivity to distractors and influence of the time limit on their efficiency.
