Abstract
The goal of this paper is to see how the global spread of the English language influences other languages, while special focus is given to its effect on the Croatian language. Like in many other countries across the world, English is present in Croatia. English words, syntagms, even whole phrases are used in the media, in business, in teaching, in science, and in everyday life. Among Croatian linguists and speakers, attitudes towards this omnipresence of English vary, some do not see anything wrong in it, while others oppose it on the grounds that it threatens the Croatian language. A questionnaire was conducted and included into this paper to show how sensitive Croatian students are to the influence of English on the Croatian language.
