Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the quality of work life among Croatian employees in the private and public sector. The study integrates two different studies of Croatian employees: a convenience sample gathered in the period from 2004 to 2007 (N=982) as a part of the Quality of work life research carried out by the Department of Psychology and a sample from 2005 (N=1011) gathered as a part of the European Work Conditions Survey carried out by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions. Two different inventories were used to assess the quality of work life: Job Satisfaction Inventory in the Croatian research and the European Working Conditions Survey Inventory used in the European research. Data was collected via one-on-one interviews. Our results provide evidence that the quality of work life is higher in the private sector than in the public sector. The results of the first study show that the following aspects of the quality of work life are higher in the private sector: advancement prospects, good and fair pay, capable management, favorable working conditions and participation in decision making. Aspect of job security is higher in the public sector. Second study has confirmed the trends visible in the first study. The aspects of advancement prospects, good pay and participation in decision making regarding the choice of coworkers and when to take a vacation are higher in the private sector while aspects of job security and interesting job are higher in the public sector. Based on the results obtained in these two studies we may conclude that the quality of work life is higher in the private sector and that there is still room for improvement of quality of work life in the public sector.
