Abstract

The aim of this study was to verify whether there are differences in the dimensions of self-concept among students involved in extracurricular activities and those who are not involved in extracurricular activities as well as to verify whether there are differences in those dimensions among students of different sexes and school age. Participants (N = 211) were students of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eight grades of one elementary school in Zagreb. The results in different dimensions of self-concept, measured on the S. Harter’s “ Self-Perception Profile for Children” (1985), have been compared for each group, where the subjects were grouped according to their involvement in extracurricular activities. The t-test proved that, according to the involvement in extracurricular activities, students differ in dimension of scholastic competence. The dimensions of social acceptance, athletic competence, behavioral conduct, physical appearance and global self-worth didn’t show statistically significant differences among groups. According to gender, participants differ significantly in behavioral conduct (where girls achieve statistically significantly higher results than boys). The chi-square test didn’t show statistically significant differences between girls and boys in relation to their involvement in extracurricular activities. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tested the difference between the respondents of fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades according to all six dimensions of self-concept. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference in those dimensions between these groups of respondents.
