Abstract
The article deals with the functioning of the old ideological opposition between the text and the image on the World Wide Web. This ancient opposition acquires new meanings in the new media environment. Since the commercial development of the Web depended on its transformation from a textual to a graphical space, the deliberate absence of images in webpages (formal aniconism) can become a conscious political gesture. The article analyzes some examples that point out the link between formal aniconism and an active understanding of the Web code. The focus on text and code becomes a formal mark of different social movements that uphold the principles of the "original" Web (openness, cooperation).
