Abstract

This thesis analyzes figures of speech in didactic class texts in high school books for germane as the first foreign language in Croatia. The aim of this study was to determine the number of figures of speech in the whole corpus and to find out if the number of figures of speech grows proportionally to level of language competence that is to the high school grade. The purpose of this paper is to determine if the class texts are stylistically rich or they lack of such expressions. The hypothesis that the number of speech figures increases in higher high scholl grades was not confirmed, because the results show that the number of figures of speech in didactic school texts varies insignificantly considering the level of speech competence and is in average from two to three speech figures pro text page. The speech figure with the highest number of found examples is the metaphor (173 examples), followed by hyperbole (58 examples) and metonymy (40 examples). Other found speech figures are comparison, personification, periphrasis and antithesis. But, considering that the allotment of literary texts in high school books, which are considered to contain a significantly larger number of speech figures than didactic texts, grows (from 7% in the first high scholl grade, amounts around 30% in the second and third grade and 53% in the fourth grade), we can not claim that the high scholl books lack of speech figures. We want only to point out that more attention can be given to processing and learning the speech figures in the didactic texts and exercizes.
