Abstract
This diploma paper analyzes the washback effect of the high-stake, school leaving exam in English (Matura) on the teaching of English as a foreign language in Croatian secondary schools. The research method used was a questionnaire administered via e-mail. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions probing into the washback effect; investigating teachers’ perceptions, attitudes, as well as their methodology and beliefs. The research sample consisted of 10 English language teachers teaching in grammar schools. The results of the research were discussed in relation to the theoretical background on the washback effect and compared with the results of previous research into this phenomenon. The findings of this research indicate that the washback effect is existent.
