Abstract
This paper deals with the connections between L. Ron Hubbard's science fiction work and the religious rhetoric belonging to the religious movements he founded, entitled Dianetics and Scientology. In exploring these connections this paper also covers the position of Dianetics and Scientology within the American religious tradition and reflects on the influence of the culture and times on Hubbard's transformation from being a science fiction writer to being a prophet.
