Abstract

A goal perspective approach suggests that motivation is a function of dispositions and situational aspects of sport context. The purpuse of this study was to determine the relationship of dispositional goal orientations and percevied motivational climate to aspects of intrinsic motivation. The main and interactive effects of dispositional and situational factors on enjoyment/interest, effort/importance, perceived competence and pressure/tension were examined. Data were collected from 580 participants, Croatian young male basketball, voleyball and football players. Measures included the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda, 1995), the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (Seifriz et al., 1992) and the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (McAuley, Tammen i Duncan, 1991). Moderated hierarchical regression analysis showed that dispositional goal orientantions were the strongest predictor of positive indices of intrinsic motivation (enjoyment, effort and perceived competence) while perceived motivational climate emerged as main predictor of negative indices of intrinsic motivation (pressure). Task orientation was related to positive aspects while perceptions of an ego-involving motivational climate was related to negative aspect of intrinsic motivation. Effort/importance was also predicted by the interaction of task orientation and perceptions of an ego-involving motivational climate and interaction of ego-orientation and also perceptions of an ego-involving climate. The results represent confirmation and extention of empirical research and are discussed in light of tenets of goal perspective theory and cognitive evaluation theory
