Abstract

The aims of this research were to establish the relation of objective measures of memory and metamemory with gender, education and health status. Participants were older people (N=531 in first part of research and N=264 in the second part), and mean age was 72 years. Objective and subjective measures of memory analysis were used. Subjective measures used were Questionnaire of forgetfulness and distress and Questionnaire of metamemory for which high reliability rates have been established α=.909 i α=.890. From the metamemory questionnaire we have isolated items which refer to the use of external memory tools and from which a new, separated measure has been formed for which a slightly diminished reliability rate has been established (α=.633). The results of the research are logical, differences between measures of memory have not been established in regards to gender, except on measure of distress. Expected correlations have been established between education and health with objective and subjective measures of memory. Healthier and more educated people have better memory skills and are less distressed and forgetful. Also more educated people use external tools more. The better the physical health of a person, the more preserved the cognitive processes are in older age. The results of this research show a form of accuracy of metacognition of one s health – the ones that perceive health as worse, in fact achieve lower results on objective measures of memory and have accurate metacognition being in a higher state of distress, forgetfulness and overall have more problems with their memory.
