Abstract

The aim of this discussion was to illustrate the different translation procedures one can employ translating metaphors from English to Croatian language. The procedures were employed and the examples taken from translations I did as part of my master's thesis at the Department of English at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. The discussion explained in short what metaphors are: figures of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common. Since the extended meaning of metaphors is often linguistically and culturally conditioned, their transference into another language as part of the translation process can be quite difficult. One can employ various procedures when translating metaphors, depending on language, the similarity between the source culture and target culture and the transparency itself. The discussion dealt with seven possible procedures, as proposed by Newmark: reproducing the same image in the target language, replacing the image in the source language with a standard target language image, translation of metaphor by simile, translation of metaphor by simile plus sense, conversion of metaphor to sense, deletion, and using the same metaphor combined with sense. The decision on which of these procedures is to be used in every specific instance of translating a metaphor is a part of the translation process. Through my examples, I have illustrated the different challenges a translator may face and the process that takes place when deciding on a procedure that would transfer the meaning of metaphors from source language to target language, specifically, from English to Croatian, the best.
