Abstract
Underconfidence with practice (UWP) describes an underconfidence phenomena in which people underestimate their recall in a test for repeated study cycles. This has been shown in many studies, and subjects have Judgments of Learning (JOLs) that are smaller than the number of learned words. In this experiment we tried to reduce the UWP effect by informing half of our subjects about it. A sample of 150 participants, divided into 6 groups participated in the study. The experiment consisted of 2 ( information: informed or uninformed about the UWP) x3 (study cycles: 1, 2 or 3) beetwen- participants design. Our results showed that subject's JOLs did not change in regard to the number of study cycles, but the number of learned word pairs increased with the number of study cycles, demonstrating the UWP effect. Also, there was no difference in JOLs beetwen participants that were or were not informed about the UWP, meaning that informing the subjects did have an influence on the UWP effect. It seems that Underconfidence with practice effect is a strong cognitive bias and further investigation of the factors reducing the effect is necessary.
