Abstract

In this study, we examined the relationships between violent behavior, self-esteem, school achievement and empathy. We also examined the relationships of these variables with gender and age. The study was conducted on a sample of 170 students from 5th to 8th grade. The results show that the participants differ significantly in violent behavior with regard to gender and class they attend. Boys and students in higher grades are more prone to bullying. Also, there are significant differences in self-esteem with regard to the class, but not with regard to gender. Students in higher grades have higher self-esteem than students in lower grades. Results also show significant differences between participants in emotional empathy with regard to gender and class. Girls and students in lower grades have better developed emotional empathy. Students differ significantly in school achievement with regard to gender and class; girls and students in lower grades achieve higher academic success. We found significant differences in physical and sexual violence with regard to gender and class; boys and students in higher grades are more prone to physical and sexual violence. There was no statistically significant difference in verbal violence with regard to gender, but it increases with age. With regard to economic and emotional violence there was no significant difference either by gender or by age. Violent behavior correlated significantly and negatively with emotional empathy in both boys and girls.
