Abstract

This thesis deals with the analysis of rhetorical speech genre, debate, as a teaching unit within the subject Croatian language. The aim was to determine how much attention in Croatian compulsory secondary education is given to the debate as a particular teaching unit, but also to show how the debate can be useful as a teaching technique. In order to establish the methodological approach to debate in class, the thesis shows the rhetoric genres in the subject Croatian language, it deals with the theory of debate and its forms as well as the reasons and goals of the classroom debate. The high school and vocational school curriculum provided a certain number of sessions for speech communication, but only one session in four years is provided for a methodological approach to debate. We analyzed four Gymnasium textbooks and one vocational school textbook in the subject Croatian language. So far, the debate in the Croatian secondary education does not occupy its rightful place in spite of its many positive outcomes.
