Abstract
There search examined linguistic features in the writing of eight-graders in order to establish the lexical, syntactical and discursive level of development of the standard Croatian language at the end of compulsory education. Since this is the developmental period in which participants acquire more complex vocabulary, syntax and text structure, their lexical, syntactical and discursive models have already been shaped. This research covered the linguistic features of texts drawn from randomly chosen schools from two far apart counties in terms of the geographical distance, Dubrovnik-Neretva county and City of Zagreb county. The corpus consisted of hundred learner essays written in the northern and in the southern parts of Croatia during regular classes at the end of the school year. The findings of this research were based on analysis of contents and descriptive statistics calculations of their essays according to shaped models.
