Abstract
Many studies have shown that unemployment can have various negative consequences on economic, social, health and psychological aspects of lifes of unemployed people. Effects of unemployment depend on many individual and environmental factors. One of those important factors is social support, which can modify negative effects and help dealing with unemployment. In this research we tried to determine whether there is a change in social support during the two-year period of unemployment and how getting a job affects social support. We were especially interested in those people who remained unemployed. We wanted to examine whether for them there is a change in social support during that period, dependent on their gender and age. We found that those participants who found new jobs possess greater social support than the participants who remained unemployed. This difference is noticeable even during the first measuring (at Time 1). For those participants who remained unemployed social support decreases with time. The decrease in social support is similar for both male and female participants. We confirmed that the changes in social support for unemployed people during the two-year period differ, dependent on the age of the unemployed. Younger participants possess greater social support than the middle-aged and older participants, both at Time 1 and Time 2. There is a greater decrease in social support for middle-aged and older participants, while there is no change in social support for younger participants.
