Abstract
This paper deals with an overview and comparative analysis of the pre-wedding custom of proposal as it is performed in villages Bački Monoštor and Bački Breg, inhabited by Šokci and situated in the southwestern part of Bačka. It is based primarily on the results of field researches on this phenomenon. It emphasizes the role of the mother-in-law in this custom and the song she sings, specific to those villages and presenting the potential remainder of the custom transmitted during ancient migrations of this subethnic groups from Dinaric region to the lowlands. The paper briefly sheds light on this custom's elements which are present in the wider area of Southeastern Europe and indicate potential ways of transmitting tradition from Dinaric to Pannonian area. The song sung by the mother-in-law during the proposal is furthermore observed from museological point of view as well as possible ways of documenting and presenting its audio and sheet music in museums.
