Abstract

The first aim of this study was to examine the relationship between body mass index, dieting, awareness and internalization of sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and different aspects of body esteem (body esteem-appearance and body esteem-weight). It was also examined which variables were important predictors of different aspects of body esteem. The second aim of this study was to explore relationship between body esteem and different aspects of self esteem. Participants were 186 adolescent girls. Instruments that we used were: Body Esteem Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (Mendelson, Mendelson and White, 2001), Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (Heinberg, Thompson and Stormer, 1995), Adolescent Dieting Scale ( Patton et al.) and Self liking competence scale (Tafarodi and Swann, 1995). Body mass indexes were also calculated. Results have shown significantly negative correlation between body mass index, dieting, awareness and internalization of societal ideals of thinness and different aspects of body esteem. Body mass index and internalization were important predictors of different aspects of body esteem. Dieting was also important predictor of body esteem-weight. Results have also shown significantly positive correlation between aspects of body esteem (appearance and weight) and aspects of self esteem (self liking and self competence). Correlation between body esteem and self liking is higher than correlation between body esteem and self competence.
