Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the relation between perceived generalized self-efficacy, perceived incompetence and perceived perseverance in the field of statistics, need for cognition and statistics test performance. The sample comprised 120 psychology students; 50 third year students and 70 fourth year students. Measuring instruments were Self-efficacy scale (Bezinović, 1988) and Need for cognition scale (Cacioppo i Petty, 1984). Significant differences were not found between the third and the fourth-year students on self-efficacy scales as well as on need for cognition scale. However, statistically significant difference was found between 3. and 4. year students in the statistics test performance. A positive correlation was established between the need for cognition and the perceived generalized self-efficacy as well as between the need for cognition and the perceived perseverance. A negative correlation was established between the need for cognition and the perceived incompetence. The perceived perseverance and perceived incompetence are significantly correlated with the statistics test performance. The generalized self-efficacy and need for cognition do not correlate with the statistics test performance. A significant multiple correlation was determined between the generalized self-efficacy, perceived perseverance, perceived incompetence and need for cognition as predictors and the statistics test as a criterion. Generalized self-efficay and perceived incompetence proved as significant predictors of the statistics test performance.
