Abstract
The aim of the thesis is to examine how new technologies influence learner motivation for learning English as a second language (L2), primarily focusing on the situation in Croatia. The paper consists of two parts: theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part of the paper we will provide an overview of the history of L2 motivation research, giving brief descriptions of every major phase. Likewise, we will present an overview of how new technologies entered the English classroom, describing their evolution. As a conclusion of the first part of the thesis we will focus on current studies and theories of the most popular new technologies used in classrooms today – the Internet, PowerPoint presentations and interactive whiteboards. The second part of the paper will include the empirical part of the thesis – a study on how new technologies influence L2 motivation which was carried out with Croatian learners of English.
