Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the role of environmental attutides, locus of control and sociodemographic variables in the prediction of proenvironmental behavior. The data was collected through online survey on the sample of 683 Croatian citizens (455 female and 228 male participants) between the ages of 18 and 77 years old. In the survey we administered sociodemographic questionnaire, New Environmental Paradigm Scale (Dunlap & Van Liere, 2000), Rotter Internal- External Locus of Control Scale (Rotter, 1966) and Proenvironmental behavior scale designed for this study’s purpose. The results show that women are more external in their locus of control, have more positive environmental attitudes and express more proenvironmental behavior. Furthermore, the internal locus of control is a characteristic of individuals who have a higher level of education and standard of living as well as those whose hobby is connected with nature. Positive environmental attitudes and internal locus of control are positively correlated with proenvironmental behavior and all tested variables are shown to be predictors of proenvironmental behavior. Environmental attitudes and hobby connected with nature together predict general and specific behavior encompassed by Proenvironmental behavior scale, while the participants’ locus of control, gender and age also represent significant predictors of proenvironmental behavior.
