Abstract
The thesis problematizes the integration of Roma children into PŠ Plavšinac, a regional school that works within the framework of OŠ Novigrad Podravski. First of all, it presents the facts of multiple marginalization of Roma in Croatia by which they have been excluded from numerous areas of social life and decision making. In an effort to improve living standards and social status of Roma minority in Croatia in general, a solution offers itself in the form of greater engagement in the education of Roma, especially in terms of the integration of Roma children into school. Gathering information about the integration of Roma children into PŠ Plavšinac has been realized through a minor field research in the form of half-structured interviews with the school’s teaching staff, a “Roma assisstant” and a Social Service worker. National programme for Roma and Action Plan for the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005 – 2015 represent strategic documents of the Republic of Croatia. By presenting these documents and comparing the measures from the documents with the actual situation in practice, we get a presentation of the degree of the integration of Roma children into PŠ Plavšinac. On the basis of such confrontation of attidudes and the results of conducted interviews, we conclude that the integration in the region of PŠ Plavšinac shows a certain progress in several areas but it also calls for a more systematic engagement of the state and its institutions in order for the entire process to assume progressional trend. The key problems in PŠ Plavšinac refer to the problem of the integration of Roma children in these areas: organization of extended day programme for Roma children, stimulation of abilities of Roma children, motivation for further education after turning 15, lack of material in the Romani language, informing Roma children and their parents about the importance of education, the integration of Roma related contents into curriculum changes, the absence of professional improvement for the teachers working with Roma children, negligence of Roma parents and poor interest in the education of their children, language barrier, the problem of hygiene, the lack of work habit in Roma children, carelessness with using textbooks and school equipment, slower progress in the acquisition of teaching matter, complete absence of preschool education in Roma children, insufficient level of cooperation between the school and the Social Servce Center, discontent with the state policy regarding the implementation of measures for the help in integration.
