Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between some student characteristics (reinforcement sensitivity, self-efficacy, subjective task value and achievement goals) and student engagement in context of learning physics. Expectancy-value model developed by Wigfield and Eccles (2000) was used as a theoretical framework. Participants were 411 second-year, third-year and fourth-year highschool students. Instruments assessing reinforcement sensitivity (RST –PQ), students' self-efficacy beliefs, achievement goals, subjective task values and student engagement were used in this study. BAS, subjective task values and achievement goals (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance and work avoidance) were identified as significant predictors of bihevioral engagement. BAS, self-efficacy beliefs, subjective task values and achievement goals (mastery-approach, performance-approach and work avoidance) were identified as significant predictors of cognitive engagement. BIS, FFFS, self-efficacy beliefs, subjective task values and achievement goals (mastery-avoidance and performance-avoidance) were identified as significant predictors of emotional engagmenent.
