Abstract

Cognitive flexibility is an executive function which refers to an ability to look at a problem differently and to adjust to the demands of the environment. Mood refers to a long-lasting affective state which can be assessed as pleasant and unpleasant mood. Pleasant mood is a state of a general subjective well-being. On the other side, unpleasant mood is a tendency to feel unpleasant emotions. These two emotional states are not mutually excluding, but can co-exist within a person at the same time. The main goal of this experiment was to see whether different types of exercise influence cognitive flexibility and pleasant and unpleasant mood of students. Before the exercise begun, the participants took the pleasant and unpleasant mood test - PANAS and the cognitive flexibility test. After taking those tests, they were divided into two groups with respect to the ratio of male and female participants. The first group had a 20-minute exercise of aerobic endurance on the stepper. The other group participated in the exercises of physical flexibility, also for 20 minutes. The exercises were done individually with the experimenter. After the exercise, the participants took a parallel version of the cognitive flexibility test and again the PANAS test. In this experiment the effects of a 20-minute exercising program on cognitive flexibility and pleasant and unpleasant mood were not found to be statistically significant. The results were interpreted as general trends. Suggestions for further research were given, regarding the methodological flaws of this experiment.
