Abstract
The first time in history non-native speakers of English have outnumbered native speakers. This sociolinguistic reality calls for scholars, teachers and learners to rethink current pedagogical principles and practices. The purpose of this study is to discuss the notion of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language with special regard to pragmatics. This paper presents the results of a focus group study and a questionnaire on ELF. The sample consisted of graduate students of English at the University of Zagreb and novice teachers from Zagreb, Croatia. Combining the two research methods both qualitative and quantitative data are available on attitudes to ELF pragmatics in language teaching. Although research in ELF pragmatics and its pedagogical implications are still in their initial phases, this study may contribute to the dialogue that has recently occurred around ELF.
