Abstract
This paper investigates the notion of eco-terrorism, and the question of whether
it constitutes a real threat to the population or is just a social construct, created to
discredit activists who promote different values and different lifestyles of prevailing.
Included is the analysis of the state of society after the terrorist attack 9/11/2001 to
determine how the discourse of fear became the dominant discourse and had an affect
on the construction of social problems as terrorist threats and its impact on the
reduction of civil liberties in the United States. A Case Study of the most radical
environmental and animalistic groups offered an insight into the gradual radicalization
of the movement, as well as in their methods and activists profile. The analysis of the
impact and role of media and amendments to the law showed that after the 2001 ecoterrorism
was presented as a terrorist threat, although the number of acts did not
significantly increased, as the principle of not harming people during the action also
didn`t change. The media and government agencies began to connect the term with
classic terrorism (such as terrorism of Al Qaeda) and eco-terrorists are presented
exclusively in a negative light and without aspirations for deeper discussion. Results
obtained from Global Terrorism Database and secondary literature shows that only a
small number of ecoterrorist acts can be considered terrorism, from which we conclude
that the term eco-terrorism is unjustified and does not pose a real threat to the
population.
