Abstract
Drawing on critical theory tradition,this thesis explains thecurrent changes in the Croatian higher education system using concepts of liberal hegemony and marketization. The idea of liberal hegemony isderivedfrom the short review of the history of liberalism, concentrating on the classical liberal era. The establishment of difference between purpose and goal serves as a basis for the discernmentbetween education and training, and also universitas and university. After contrasting thehistorical circumstances of the occurrence and the key features of the Humboldtian model and the Bologna Process, main documents concerning the latter have been analysed in view of forms of marketization suggested by D. Dolenec and L. Wedlin. The same analysis is applied for equivalent Croatian documents. Analyses showed plenty of evidence supporting the hypothesis that liberal discourse prevails and results in changing the nature of theneohumanistic idea of education by distancing from the principle of autonomy and the unconditional search for the truth, and the subordination of higher education to the economic needs, i.e. its marketization.
