Abstract
The paper presents the results of analysis of different German texts on the use of the expression [in+year], which showed that in general written usage the common expression “im Jahre X" is not threatened by the analyzed expression. In telegraphic style used in headers as well as in texts on the economy and specialized economic texts, however, an increased presence of the phrase in question may be observed. The study attempts to explain this fact with syntactic and semantic reasons. The paper also argues that the expression in question is not an Anglicism in systemic discrepancy to German. Three standard grammars do not give a satisfactory syntactic classification of the number identifying a year both with the introductory “im Jahre” and without it.
