Abstract
The novel "The English Years" (1999) marks the beginning of the second phase in the work of the contemporary Austrian novelist Norbert Gstrein. While in the first phase Gstrein focuses on existential issues connected with life in the Austrian province, the second phase of his writing is dominated by the impossibility of language to verbalize war experience. In this context, the central problem of the novel is the one of disintegrating identity and problems biography. The dark legacy of World War II is therefore seen as permeating the postmodern crises of identity and narration.
