Abstract
This Master's thesis deals with translation and an analysis of some characteristics of film subtitling from Swedish into Croatian. The thesis contains the translations of a part of two movie films: the crime movie Irene Huss – Den som vakar i mörkret and the kids' movie Klara. The thesis concentrates on the process of subtitling keeping in mind the importance of the manuscript, the specificity of code timing and the role of the picture on the screen when subtitling movies. Subtitling as a special sort of translation is characterized by certain rules and guidelines, and this thesis focuses on the possibilities and frequency of their use in the context of translating these two movies. Some of the methods that were opted for when subtitling the movies include methods such as condensing the text, omission, paraphrase, ellipsis, merging short dialogues, simplifying the syntax, simple vocabulary. By subtitling these two films of different genre, the objective was to depict the specificities or rather the possible differences in the method and approach to subtitling movies that are aimed at different target groups. Great focus was put on the characteristics of subtitling of a film from Swedish into Croatian due to the specificity of these two languages.
Apart from the subtitling of the movies and analysis of subtitling characteristics, the thesis also contains the translation of an administrative text from Swedish into Croatian, as well as three texts of different text types which were translated from Croatian into Swedish so as to present my translation competence when translating from Swedish into Croatian and vice versa.
