Abstract
This thesis consists of five annotated translations, which are accompanied by a discussion. The texts are excerpts from three books that were translated from English into Croatian (Did My Genes Make Me Do It? by Avrum Stroll, Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson and Framework for Major Emergency Management (Ireland)), and two translations from Croatian into English (excerpts from Pitanje Nade by Tanja Radović and excerpts from two texts from Kulturpunkt.hr website). The discussion focuses on phrasal verbs and their presence in the aforementioned texts, i.e. both in English source texts and the L2 translations into English which were completed for the sake of this thesis. Some general overview of phrasal verbs is provided, supplemented by some common assumptions and preconceived notions about this verb category. Additionally, discussion and explanations regarding specific linguistic choices used in the translations are included as well. In addition to this, the paper focuses on how conventions of the genre and text typology determine the stylistic choices as far as the use of phrasal verbs is concerned. Although the corpus used here is extremely limited in scope and does not qualify as conclusive evidence (ca 55000 characters in total), some comparative analysis of the texts in question is given. This should serve the purpose of providing some (albeit limited) insight into how (or whether) these mechanisms of genre and perceived notions of formality/informality influence the use of phrasal verbs.
