Abstract

The paper deals with the phonetic correction according to the principles of the Verbotonal method of Petar Guberina. The method is mostly used in second language acquisition for correcting pronunciation in both native and second language speakers, as well as in speech and hearing rehabilitation. The Verbotonal method takes into account individuals and their own individual abilities. The spoken word is the basis for Guberina's theory, so the paper shows auditory and visual values of the spoken language that are used in phonetic correction and in preparing optimal and non-optimal material. Therefore, this paper will for the first time compare the correction of the pronunciation of the Croatian apical phonem /r/ of a French speaking Croatian native and the French uvular phonem /R/ of a Croatian speaking French native. The phonetic correction was done in ten sessions with two students, the first one is a Croatian native speaker who studies French and the other one is a French native speaker who learnt Croatian according to the principles of the Verbotonal method. Elements, modes and the course of the sessions are described and the results are given according to the perceptive test (by evaluating pronunciation in sampled words before and after the correction) and according to the acoustic analysis (by measuring the HNR and the duration of both phonemes prior to and after the correction).
