Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to present the digitization process of the herbarium orchids collection of the Croatian herbarium (Herbarium croaticum) of the Botanical Institute of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. Unlike the digitization of other materials, here is the specific mode of digitization because it includes fragile herbarium specimens. This paper describes the process of preparing material for digitization, digitization of herbarium sheets, and entering metadata into a database and georeferencing. The description includes the application and used tools, and a special scanner used for digitization of herbarium specimens. The purpose of the paper is to show that the digitization of such materials differs from others and what are its specific characteristics. In addition, some examples of digitization of herbarium in the world are mentioned. The paper shows what is needed to digitize this kind of material and how much time this process takes. The aim of this paper is also to help digitize herbarium specimens of the Botanical Institute by presenting all the steps of the process, as well as estimating the time needed to digitize a herbarium sheet.
