Abstract
An Archive contains records of long-term value for culture, history and other sciences. One of the main responsibilities of an archivist is the protection and preservation of those records. In order to preserve relevant documents, it is necessary of the archive to provide adequate conditions. Records are mostly made of organic matter and therefore highly susceptible to decay. Microclimatic factors such as moisture, heat, light and atmospheric pollutants can affect archival preservation. In addition to those, archivists also deal with numerous factors which may endanger and also accelerate the process of decay of archival records, such as mildew, insects and rodents. Approaches and methods of archival protection have changed over the years and will continue to change. Archives should do everything in their power to preserve and prevent decomposing of archival records. Except from providing optimal conditions, for its total preservation it is also essential to pay attention to handling of archival records – for which archive's employees are in charge of.
