Abstract
In this paper terms such as first, second an foreign lanugage are explained. Some
researches relatated to this classification are presented. Special attention was given to
the vowels. The paper consists of perceptive and acoustic analysis. Perceptual test was
conducted in order to differenciate the native (Croatian) and non-native speakers
(Polish). Acoustic analysis was conducted in order to measure values of first three
formants for all groups of speakers. Their vowel systems were described and their
formants were measured using computer programme Praat. The results are compared
and presented in terms of differences and similarities between vowel systems of native
and non-native speakers as well as between two groups of non-native speakers at
different language levels.
