Abstract
This thesis comprises five annotated translation, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian: The Willpower Instinct. How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It by Kelly McGonigal.(2012), Social Class in the 21st Century by Mike Savage (2015) and UNHCR Resettlement Handbook (2011) and two from Croatian into English: Ženski udesi by Živko Bertić (1902) and Oči by Edo Popović (2007). The discussion consists of examples from the translations of two literary texts Ženski udesi by Živko Bertić and Oči by Edo Popović. The aim of the discussion is to show how metaphors reflect cognitive and cultural human experiences that are encoded by language, and how a translator should approach translating metaphors from Croatian into English — two languages with distinct, but to some extent overlapping, cultural backgrounds.
