Abstract
This paper deals with sociological and anthropological concepts of the social construction of place and the construction of social memory and/or forgetting on the example of the former mosque in Zagreb, today Home of Croatian Association of Artists (CAA) and Trg žrtava fašizma square in Zagreb. The subject is approached through the extensive historical overview of the Home of CAA and Trg žrtava fašizma square and largely relies on the interpretation of the materials collected through the qualitative research method of in-depth interviews. The paper tries to answer questions such as: what are the individual and social practices of inscribing meaning into a physical space? What is the relationship between physical and symbolic space? It also explains how the processes of sacralization and desacralization and the successive resimbolization of the former mosque – today Home of CAA and Trg žrtava fašizma – influenced the social construction of the place Džamija and its social memory.
