Abstract
We have been observing socially engaged theatre in Zagreb’s theatre scene through understanding motivation, experiences and perception of socially engaged drama artists and workers involved in socially relevant makings of art. No matter which theatrical function these artist and workers obtain, they lead us to a conclusion that socially engaged dramatic art is a medium of some sort through which one can express critics, stimulate intellectual thinking and create valid conditions for making the society prosper. Artists determine their goals according to their definitions about theatre’s educational, progressive and upbringing role. Relying on thematic analysis as our main methodology in this research, we examined the function of socially engaged theatre in Zagreb’s theatrical scene through some of the most specific themes and patterns which led us to answer our main question in this research – why do drama artist decide to work in a socially engaged theatre? After talking to our interviewees and consulting scientific materials written by experts such as Erving Goffman, Howard S. Becker, Pierre Bourdieu, Miloš Ilić, Darko Lukić and Ivan Kuvačić, we’ve come to a conclusion that answer to our main research question lays in artists’ motivational process (intrinsic and extrinsic), their action in line with their goals, their previous experiences and influences made on audiences.
